Based on knowledge about Papuans around the Humboldt Bay acquired during his work for the Dutch administration the author wrote this PhD thesis.

The book presents the view of the social-democratic author about West New Guinea. It gives a picture of the situation in N.G, the conflict in 1945 between The Netherlands and Indonesia and the Indonesian transfer of sovereignity where N.G. stayed out of the transfer. Next developments are explored as well as the point of view of the author about N.G., why the interest of the Papuans would be better served by a quick transfer to Indonesia

After of short period in the Dutch Indies the author went to the Central Mountain Area of New Guinea where the Wissel Lakes were just recently discovered. His task was to map not yet explored areas until the Japanese occupied New Guinea. Together with a number of mountain Papuans he tried to stay out of reach of the Japanese. Because of his adventures he became internationaly known as the 'Jungle Pimpernel'
